Main Menu

This is an idea for a possible dictionary. Each entry starts with a Standard Chinese (Mandarin) headword, followed by a language or dialect region, followed by a variety of regional pronunciations delineated by province. If there is too much variation within a province, further delineations are made with city headwords. Since a single province can have over a hundred variations pronounced the same way but only differing by tone, it has been decided to delete the tonal contours and collapse all these similar pronunciations into a single item. Furthermore, there are actual Chinese characters for every dialectal word in the original data collected, however these were deleted as they are often obscure and unknown even to native speakers. What is left is the variety of pronunciations grouped by language then by province then by city, minus tone and Chinese characters.
Everything is in IPA here, so if you want to convert with Pinyin (拼音), please note that /ph/ = {p}, /p/ = {b}, /tɕh/ = {q}, /tɕ/ = {j}, /ɕ/ = {x}, /tʂh/ = {ch}, /tʂ/ = {zh}, /ʂ/ = {sh}, /ʐ/ = {r}, /tsh/ = {c}, /ts/ = /z/, /kɤ/ = {ge}. Many IPA sounds do not have a Pinyin equivalent, such as: /b, d, z, r, ʃ, ɬ, œ, ə, ɪ, ɵ, ʮ, ɯ, ʉ, ɐ, θ, æ̃/, etc.
